970 I am from an isolated place in the NC/VA Appalachian Mountains. My Dad, age 100, was a historian and columnist. He said that mountain natives wrote him, or had someone write for them, and said that the "Sin Eater" is true. They remember it from their childhood. The ancestors of the local people were Scotch-Irish and English. They came to the mountains in the 1700's. The mountains are rugged therefore they were completely isolated. As a result, many of the customs, ballads, speech and tales are from the 1700's. In "The History of English"Dr. Cratis Williams, a longtime family friend, addresses some of the speech patterns/words from the "back hills”.In summary, the book is fiction but the custom is true.
