Ebook About Religious indifference—the belief that all religions are equally valid and able to lead people to salvation—has rapidly gained global ascendency over the last five decades. It’s even infected the Catholic Church, wreaking havoc on her mission to the world. Why is indifference deadly to Catholicism?Because it turns Catholicism into “just another religion,” neuters the Church’s role as our path to salvation and converts the parish into little more than a social gathering place. The result?Former Catholics now constitute the second largest “religion” in America. Seventy percent of Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist—and even higher percentages reject the Church’s moral teachings. Mass attendance is in freefall, and even the most basic habits of Sunday-going Catholics, such as regular Confession, have been lost. Eric Sammons, a former diocesan director of evangelization and now the editor-in-chief of Crisis Magazine, pulls the curtain back on the rise of religious indifference, uncovering a wealth of fascinating particulars about what made the “old” Church work, and what is causing the “new” to collapse. He identifies the most damaging distortions of the Faith, presented as progress, and explains why Church leaders felt compelled to upend traditional Catholic life.In captivating detail, Sammons explores why the New Evangelization was destined to fail and explains how the decision to de-emphasize the Church’s exclusive role in the process of salvation inevitably led to mass abandonment of the sacraments. He identifies how certain teachings were ignored or toned down—leading to their sudden collapse—and how progressives elevated ecumenism over evangelization and supplanted proclamation of the Gospel with “dialogue.”Deadly Indifference is both a vital examination of the current crisis facing the Church and a blueprint for how to overcome it. Let’s recover what was lost and return the Church to its unique rank as the light in a darkened world.Book Deadly Indifference: How the Church Lost Her Mission, And How We can Reclaim It Review :
42 Just finished reading my copy of Eric Sammons new book Deadly Indifference. Mr. Sammons presents a thought provoking “how we got where we are” analysis of the current tragic decline of the Catholic Church today.Using extensive historical information and referencing diverse sources Mr Sammons presents an erudite and compelling theory, in common sense terms easily understood by the average Catholic reader, that the Church’s doctrine “outside of the Catholic Church there is no salvation” is not an antiquated concept or a bit of triumphalist elitism but is instead vital to the Church’s mission.Mr. Sammons reveals that while this teaching has never been formally rejected by the Church, it has been obscured in the last sixty years in practice by a de facto change in hierarchical attitude towards it.An attitude manifested by the Church’s studied efforts to place as little emphasis as possible upon this perennial teaching in current documents, sermons and especially in undertakings involving other Christian denominations and non Christian religions. He further posits that it is precisely these studied efforts, since Vatican II, directed toward soft peddling this firm doctrine regarding salvation that has been a decisive factor leading to the precipitous decline in Church membership, the failure to attract new members and ultimately the loss of focus on the Church’s primary mission of saving souls.Mr. Sammons meticulously builds a solid foundation for the importance of the salvation doctrine by presenting an illuminating history of the doctrine based upon biblical sources, writings of Early Church Fathers, theologians and saints, council documents and papal encyclicals. In tracing the history of the doctrine he also reveals how and why the understanding of it was subtly undermined in the decades following Vatican II and explains the ways this has adversely affected the ability of the Church to fulfill her divine purpose. What I found most refreshing is that Mr. Sammons doesn’t just leave us there with this dire analysis but provides reasonable and practical solutions that lay Catholics can pursue to help guide the Church back to her primary mission on a parish by parish program of restoration and reclamation.Mr. Sammons clear concise prose makes this an excellent read especially for Catholics who remember what the Church had always taught who are struggling to understand just what happened to the Church and want to help repair the damage but also for those who think they know what this Church teaching means and might be surprised by what they learn.
